Anne umland picasso biography

Music - Luscious Jackson. I'm Alison Stewart. The Museum of Modern Arts, newest Pablo Picasso exhibition spotlights work from the artist made in the summer of at a villa 45 miles south of Paris. It's called Picasso in Fontainebleau. It is a mix of the personal.

An essay by Anne Umland incorporates

There are etchings from inside the villa and family photos with his son Paul. There are big, bold works that scream Picasso, including four six-foot-high canvases that he painted side by side within weeks of each other. Three women at the Spring and Three Musicians each representing the artist's disparate styles, new classism, and cubism. A review from The Guardian said, "Thoughtful and ambitious, Picasso in Fontainebleau is a wonderful take on one of the best-known artists of the 20th century.

If you're thinking, "There seem to be a lot of Picasso shows," there's a reason. This is the 50th anniversary of the influential and sometimes controversial artist's death. Picasso in Fontainebleau is on display through February 17th. MoMA curator and art historian, Anne Umland, joins me to discuss. Anne, welcome to the studio.

Ann Umland: Thank you so much for having me, Alison. Alison Stewart: Listeners, you can head to our Instagram. I took a bunch of pictures when I went to see the show so they're on our stories allofitwnyc.
